Autumn Wedding Styling Tips
Looking for Autumn wedding styling tips?
I love Autumn weddings and September is usually one of my most enquired-about months of the year (and I’m seeing an increase in October wedding enquiries too!). So to help all you Fall wedding couples, here are my top 3 tips for styling an Autumnal wedding:
TIP 1. PLAY WITH COLOUR
The colour palette is one of the foundations of your wedding design. And it will inform lots of your styling decisions during these months of wedding planning. When I build a wedding colour palette for my clients I am inspired by their personalities, preferred colours (and any that are disliked), the existing venue or location colours, and colours that work with the season. So keep all this in mind when designing your Autumn wedding colour palette. But remember Autumn palettes don’t all have to include rusty oranges and rich reds (although we do love those warm tones). Consider a soft and muted take on Fall. Or even vivid brights that compliment the seasonal colours. Or how about a plethora of wintery greens, and unexpected accent colours to add contrast?

TIP 2. WORK WITH THE SEASON
Nature is particularly astounding during this change of season with a riot of Autumnal colours and textures. Let this inspire your design and add depth to your styling. Take a walk in your favourite place and look around you. What do you particularly love about what you see in the Autumn landscape? Look beyond what is typically ‘wedding-y’. Some of my favourite Autumn wedding florals include elements such as dried brown ferns which you would typically see ‘dying’ if you went out for a walk during the Fall. One of my favourite ever bridal bouquets for an October wedding used Old Man’s Beard which out in nature often looks like a fluffy weed in the Autumn hedgerows.
TIP 3. SET THE MOOD
When we talk about Autumn weddings the words cosy, inviting and intimate are batted around a lot. And for good reason! One of the best things about an Autumn-Winter wedding is that you’re not reliant on good weather and sunshine for an outdoor celebration like you are for a summer wedding. Instead, you can embrace hosting a warm and welcoming celebration indoors with low lighting and rich surfaces. And if you go get some sunshine for your wedding photos, well that’s a bonus! Set the Autumnal mood and engage the senses with considered scents and tastes, textured fabrics, and ambient lighting. I’m a huge fan of candlelight but also consider the great potential of LED options; chic bar-style cordless lamps, battery church candles in semi-opaque vessels and lanterns, fairy light canopies. And of course a great production company can create a bespoke lighting plan, perfect for your venue and style.
